MASTER’S DEGREE – THESIS ASSIGNMENT

How to fill in the thesis assignment form:
  • Part 1: The student provides their personal details and selects the thesis supervisor. 

  • Part 2: The student indicates the subject area and the title (topic) of the thesis; tick the box in case of a title change; indicate any co-supervisor.

  • Part 3: To be completed in case of withdrawal or change of supervisor.

  • Part 4: To be completed by the Degree Subcommittee.

Along with the Thesis Assignment form, it is mandatory to also submit the “nulla osta” (clearance form).
  • For theses involving attendance in laboratories, it is mandatory to complete information, training, and instruction activities with the RADRL of the identified laboratory and to fill in the relevant clearance form, signed by the RADRL, the thesis supervisor, and the student.

  • For theses involving fieldwork or data processing, it is mandatory to complete points 1 and 3; the clearance form must be signed by the thesis supervisor and the student.

The thesis assignment request will be processed in the month following submission. Requests cannot be submitted during the month of August.
Within 3 months of the thesis assignment, a Referee will be appointed by the Subcommittee of the CCD.

REGULATIONS FOR THE MASTER’S DEGREE FINAL EXAMINATION
(Effective from the January 2018 graduation session – Resolution of the Geological Sciences Degree Committee, June 2017)

The final examination consists of preparing an original thesis with new scientific data.

Examination format:

  • Brief introductory presentation of the candidate to the Committee by the Supervisor;

  • A 15-minute PowerPoint presentation by the candidate, including discussion of the results of an original research work;

  • Three questions asked by the Committee, related to the specific topic as well as general knowledge, in any case connected to the thesis subject.

Final grade calculation:
To the weighted average of the student’s academic record, calculated by the Student Administration Office, up to 9 additional points will be added as follows:

i. Academic record (0 or 2 points):
2 points if the student graduates on time, or within one year beyond the standard duration if they participated in the Erasmus program; in all other cases, the score is zero.

ii. Referee (0–2 points):
Evaluation by the referee based on currently applicable criteria: originality of the topic, breadth of references to recent literature, structure of the introduction, distinction between data and interpretation, consistency of interpretations with data, and effectiveness of figures and illustrations.

iii. Committee (0–5 points):
Evaluation based on the quality of the PowerPoint presentation, clarity of exposition, and responses to questions.

Awarding of honors (cum laude):
i. Virtual grade ≥ 112/110;
ii. Unanimous approval of the Committee.

TIMELINE

  • From the 1st to the 15th of the month preceding the Master’s graduation session, submit the Graduation Application (the graduation application is Italian due to internal regulation therefore if you have any issue due to language issue ASK FOR HELP, e.g. your tutor, or the administration), including a €16 revenue stamp, to the Student Administration Office of the Faculty of Science, located in the “Centri Comuni” building at the Monte Sant’Angelo campus.

  • By the end of the month preceding the Master’s graduation session, send the Degree Examination Booking Form (.doc or .docx format) to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

  • Within the 15 days prior to the graduation session, the Student Administration Office will summon candidates for administrative checks and submission of documentation.

  • At least 10 days before the graduation session, deliver a copy (electronic or printed) of the thesis to the Referee appointed by the CCD Subcommittee.

  • At least 10 days before the graduation session, send a copy of the thesis by email (exclusively via services such as Jumbomail, UNINA Filesender, or similar—not as a standard email attachment) or on CD to each member and substitute member of the Graduation Committee.

  • At least 10 days before the graduation session, deposit a copy of the thesis on CD in the CCD mailbox on the ground floor of the Department of Earth, Environmental and Resource Sciences (DiSTAR) at the Monte Sant’Angelo campus, or send the PDF version to This email address is being protected from spambots.
