DiSTAR Joins INGV’s Summer Outreach Initiative at Vulcano and Stromboli

DiSTAR is again this year involved in INGV’s initiative aimed at having students from various Italian universities collaborate in outreach work during the summer months at the visitor rooms of the Vulcano and Stromboli operations centers.

A Hands-On Experience in Science Communication

The students’ task, led by a researcher, will be to provide the public with scientifically accurate information regarding volcanic activity on the Aeolian Islands. This is a valuable opportunity to engage directly with the public, improve communication skills, and gain field experience in a real scientific context.

Student Selection and Participation

DiSTAR is currently holding a selection process for interested students. Students who have already participated in previous years may also apply; their requests will be considered if all available spots are not filled by first-time participants.

DiSTAR is required to report 8 students willing to participate.

Period and Weekly Shifts

The activity will take place between June 30 and September 30, organized in weekly shifts.
Students are expected to:

• Arrive at the designated center on Monday morning (by 12:00 noon)
• Leave the following Monday no earlier than 2:00 p.m. to allow proper handover

The Visitor Hall will be open to the public every day, for a total of 6 hours per day, with the following schedule:

• 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
• 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Reimbursement of Expenses

From an administrative point of view, INGV will allocate funds to the selected universities to be given to each individual student as reimbursement for travel and food expenses.
The reimbursable amount must not exceed €60.00 per day per student and will be paid to the respective universities upon presentation of a debit note issued by the university concerned.

How to Apply

Students must submit their application in PDF format to Prof. Petrosino (email: petrosin@unina.it) no later than 12:00 noon on June 16.
The PDF should include:

• A brief curriculum vitae, including information on any international stays (e.g., Erasmus) and foreign language skills (English, French, German)
• Bachelor’s degree certificate, including transcript and graduation mark
• Transcript of exams for students enrolled in a Master’s degree program
• Transcript of exams for students enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program
• Indication of week(s) of availability

Selection Priorities

• Four positions will be reserved for students enrolled in the Master’s degree in Volcanology
• Among students of Master’s degrees taught in Italian, preference will be given to those who completed their Bachelor’s thesis in Volcanology, Petrography, or Geophysics
